Khatiwada is an Assistant Professor of law at the Tribhuwan University Faculty of Law (Nepal Law Campus). Khatiwada also serves as a board member of the Tribhuwan University Center for Environment Law and a member of the editorial team of Nepal Law Review. Prior to his appointment at the Tribhuwan University, Khatiwada taught graduate and undergraduate courses on international law, international trade law and jurisprudence at Chakrabarti Habi Education Academy College of Law. At Chakrabarti Law, he also served as the research director of the Centre for Human Rights and Democracy. Prior to his career in the Academia, Khatiwada had clerked for Supreme Court Justice Prem Sharma, assisted the UN Special Rapporteur on extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions in the research and drafting of a report on the use of Force in Demonstration (the report was submitted the Human Rights Council) and served in a group of experts that drafted the Competition Law Guidelines and Anti-dumping, Countervailing and Safeguard Measures Bill for the government of Nepal. He holds an LL.M. degree in international law from the University of Cambridge, where he was an St Edmund's Duke of Edinburgh Scholar and LL.B. from Kathmandu School of Law. He was a McGill Echenberg Human Rights Fellow 2013 at McGill University, Faculty of Law and carried out research on social economic rights litigation at FXB Centre for Health and Human Rights, Harvard University in Fall 2014. In 2015 Khatiwada was awarded Peace and Justice Initiative Fellowship in International Criminal Law by the Peace and Justice Initiative, the Hague, the Netherland and is presently studying the legal preparedness of Nepal in acceding to the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court.
Khatiwada is admitted to practice law in Nepal and is a founding partner of a law firm based in Kathmandu. Khatiwada has advised the government of Nepal and international organizations on issues relating to international trade law, competition law, international criminal law, intellectual property rights, women rights, land rights and food security law. Additionally, he has represented before the Supreme Court, other subordinate courts and arbitral tribunals in public interest litigations, human rights, constitutional law, criminal law, and commercial disputes.
